From Cauldron Builder to Mask Maker: Tom Krause is a True Hero for San Diego
When Dr. Tim Morris, a Pulmonologist at UCSD Hospital, in charge of leading the Hospital's COVID 19 efforts, spoke to our friend, Tom Krause, about a problem, the resourceful Krause knew just how to help! The problem was a serious lack of facemasks for the medical professionals at UCSD Hospital. Tom, who built the new Cal State Games cauldron, got right to work making protective equipment out of whatever he could find. Tom figured that if could build the Cal State Games cauldron, he would be able to make shields for our heroes in healthcare.

Tim and Tom created a couple of prototypes out of water bottles and eventually came to the idea of using clear plastic and elastic. Supplies are hard to find, but they were able to get enough materials to make a difference. Tom's wife, two sons and neighbors got to work assembling at a distance, practically creating a small factory. The masks have been a huge success for the hospital. The Krause family stepped up to help San Diego once again and for everyday heroes like them, we are forever grateful. Thank you Tom and family!
The California Winter Games Youth Ice Hockey Tournament is Back! This upcoming President’s Day Weekend, February 13–16 , the California Winter Games will welcome over 80 youth ice hockey teams to arenas across San Diego. Here’s what’s in store: Torch Lighting Ceremony Step onto the ice and witness the ceremonial lighting of the torch and cauldron, a symbolic kickoff to the Games. Teams will line up on the ice for this unforgettable Olympic-style moment. Tailgate Party – 4:00 PM After the ceremony, head to the North Lot of Pechanga Arena for the ultimate Gulls tailgate experience, featuring fun games, delicious food, and exciting prizes for players and families.
